Iris Van Herpen Takes Inspiration From Fossils To Make Fashion Futuristic.

Dutch couturier, Iris Van Herpen, known for designing Beyonce’s cape gown for the Renaissance Tour, is now in the news for something bigger and better.

She is now on a journey to make futuristic clothes taking inspiration from fossils. She is using polyurethane, polyamide powder, glass organza, mylar film, and borosilicate glass to create her outfits.

With the range of her work, Herpen has managed to add some prestigious names to her clientele. Along with Beyonce, known faces to choose from her creations are Jeniffer Lopez, Tilda Swinton, and Lady Gaga. Her designs are structural and exude an otherworldly vibe.

In the 2021 Met Gala, Grimes wore a gown designed by Iris Van Herpen. It was called “Inspired by Distant Futures.” It was a laser-cut gown and truly a labor of love. The gown took around 900 hours to get ready.

In the next year, 2022, many other celebrities appeared at the Met Gala extravaganza in outfits created by Iris Van Herpen. Celebs to wear the Dutch couturier’s designs at the 2022 Met Gala were singers Dove Cameron and Teyana Taylor and model Winnie Harlow.

Dove Cameron was ecstatic about the look of the event. The outfit was tailored with recycled mylar, and Cameron Stated,

It reminds me of a spine… I love how intricate and detailed it is.”

The designer will now showcase more than a hundred creations by her at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The retrospective goes by the name of “Sculpting the Senses.

Further, the exhibition is an extension of the natural influence on Iris Van Herpen and her designs. You will see inspirations of skeletons, rocks, and fossils in her creations.

About the exhibition, the futuristic designer says,

“I knew I wanted this to be more than a fashion exhibition. I wanted this retrospective to represent all the layers of life that I’m influenced by; dance, art, science, architecture, nature, philosophy.”
