Elizabeth Taylor’s Dior Gown Worn To Her First Oscar Win In 1961 Is Up For Auction
Elizabeth Taylor has been a screen icon and style diva for the longest time. It has been 63 years since her first Oscar win in 1961. Now, the Dior gown she wore to her first Oscar win in 1961 is about to get auctioned.
The Cleopatra actress donned a floral gown by Christian Dior for this prestigious occasion. At the 33rd Academy Awards in 1961, she bagged the laurel of the best actress for her performance in Battlefield 8.
She portrayed the character of a Manhattan call girl in love with a prominent businessman with sheer perfection.
After wearing the Christian Dior gown to her first Oscar win, Taylor started to consider the floral gown to be her good luck charm. So, she kept on repeating this style on many occasions.
Earlier, it was believed that the dress was preserved in Dior’s archive. However, to the surprise of many, this gown was found in a suitcase filled with many other outfits of Taylor in London last year.
Now, this outfit is to be auctioned. The pre-sale value of this Dior outfit is estimated to be around £60,000 to £100,000. This outfit is to be auctioned on 12th December 2023 at “Kerry Taylor Auction’s Passion for Fashion sale.”
For the spring/summer collection of Dior, Siorée à Rio, Marc Bohan designed the outfits. The one worn by Elizabeth Taylor was feminine and flattering for her silhouette.
This collection, including the one worn by Elizabeth Taylor, was among the first creations of Marc Bohan after he took charge of Dior as the creative director. He replaced Yves Saint Laurent in 1960.
Nevertheless, the sleeveless gown from Dior had a yellow bodice. The bodice was further complemented with a taffeta silk belt in green. The belt had a red rose in it.
The bubble skirt in a neutral tone had floral embroidery.
Some other outfits and accessories worn by Taylor are also to be auctioned at the event. One of those is the robe she wore for her movie Boom! It was designed by none other than Karl Lagerfeld.
Another Lagerfeld masterpiece to be auctioned is Taylor’s cocktail dress from the Tiziani collection. In addition, a crepe silk outfit in blue by Marc Bohan will be up for grabs at the auction.
